gnome-shell

also: GNOME Shell, gnome shell

The core user interface and window manager for the GNOME desktop environment, responsible for managing windows, panels, activities, and user interactions on Linux systems.

gnome-shell is the graphical shell that provides the visual interface and desktop experience for GNOME (GNU Network Object Model Environment). It handles window management, the top panel, application launcher, and the Activities overview where you can search and switch between open windows and applications.

Unlike traditional desktop shells that separate the window manager from the panel and launcher, gnome-shell integrates all these components into a unified experience. It's built on modern technologies like Wayland (on newer systems) or X11, and uses OpenGL for rendering effects.

For example, when you click Activities in the top-left corner of a GNOME desktop, or press the Super key, gnome-shell displays the Activities overview. You can search for applications, view open windows, or access virtual desktops—all managed by gnome-shell behind the scenes.
